2023-2024 Outstanding Alumni Visit: Alumni Chan Hoi Wing
Graduation Year: 2014
Positions: Eastern District Councillor, Chairman of the Hong Kong Youth Association, Member of the Election Committee of the National Youth Federation
In prosperous and affluent Hong Kong, the gap between the rich and the poor is significant. There are still over one million people living in poverty, including 100,000 individuals residing in subdivided flats, struggling to survive in cramped conditions. Brother Chan Hoi Wing, the current Eastern District Councillor, understands the hardships faced by grassroots citizens and dedicates himself to improving their livelihood. During the pandemic, he fearlessly visited the elderly and braved the rain to deliver supplies to neighbors, driven by a pure heart and a desire to create a more equitable society.
Senior Brother Chan was born into a grassroots family. His father once suffered a serious illness, requiring a substantial amount of money for medical treatment, which plunged the family into financial difficulties. As a child, he often wondered why Hong Kong, an economically prosperous city, could not provide better support for its less fortunate citizens.
Coming from a grassroots background, he has a deeper understanding of the struggles faced by those in similar situations. This childhood notion became ingrained in him, and with the guidance of a good teacher, the desire to help the grassroots was put into action. Mr. Hong Lianshan, a former district councillor from our school, invited students to volunteer to visit the elderly. These experiences changed the trajectory of Brother Chan’s life. Initially studying Finance at the University of Hong Kong with aspirations of working in the financial sector, he discovered through his volunteer work that he found greater fulfillment in community service than in the bustling financial world.
After deciding to pursue community work, Brother Chan devoted himself sincerely to serving society. During the pandemic, he continued the legacy of his teachers by leading a group of students to visit elderly individuals living alone. One experience stood out: a widow who had lost her husband during the epidemic found solace in the company of Brother Chan and the young volunteers, allowing her grief to surface in tears. Through these visits, Brother Chan gained insight into the hardships faced by grassroots citizens, as well as the loneliness and helplessness felt by the elderly. He believes that young people have the capacity to contribute more through social services, helping to create a more harmonious and equitable society.
Brother Chan's political career has not been without challenges. In 2021, at the age of 25, he participated as the youngest candidate in the Legislative Council Election Committee sector members' election. While youth can be an advantage, it also brings challenges; he was ultimately eliminated due to a lack of experience. Despite feeling disappointed, he refused to let setbacks defeat him, regrouping to continue his community work. He believes that "victory and defeat are only temporary; serving the community is what matters most."
With a spirit of selfless service, Brother Chan continues to dedicate himself to community work. On September 7, 2023, Chai Wan was struck by a once-in-500-years heavy rainstorm. As the community director, Brother Chan quickly posted updates on social media and reported the situation to the government. He personally inspected the disaster area, tirelessly working through the rain to assist those in need. His commitment led him to clear mud from roads and communicate the situation to various departments, prioritizing the safety and well-being of others.
His relentless efforts culminated in his victory in the District Council election in December 2023. At 25, he represents both the golden age of youth and the potential of our school. He encourages young people to take responsibility for society and the country, becoming pillars of the community. Brother Chan is committed to making significant contributions to society and the nation, bringing pride to our school.
