2022 Distinguished Alumni Visit: Alumni Wong Ka Lok
Years Attended: 2007-2013
Current Position: Special Musician of the Hong Kong Chinese OrchestraPassionate about Music
The bow glides back and forth on the strings, producing melodious and enchanting sounds. The timbre varies, sometimes high-pitched, sometimes soft, with lingering notes that resonate endlessly—this is the erhu, a traditional Chinese musical instrument. While the public may see it as merely an ancient instrument, for young alumnus Wong Ka Lok, it embodies the passion of his youth and has been a steadfast companion through the challenges of life. As an erhu musician in the Chinese Orchestra, he channels his love for this instrument to carve out his place in the world.
During our visit, we met in the school auditorium. A young man in a neat suit and white sneakers entered, a stark contrast to the typical image of a classical musician. However, after Brother Wong demonstrated his erhu skills, everyone’s preconceived notions were completely overturned. In his hands, the erhu seemed to come alive, transforming into a fluttering butterfly. His agile fingers danced gracefully across the strings, and the majestic sound filled the room. Suddenly, he mimicked the neighing of a horse, evoking the feeling of a galloping steed. His mastery of the erhu astonished all, highlighting why he is celebrated as a talented musician.
Brother Wong's journey with the erhu began in junior high school when his school implemented the "One Person, One Instrument" program. Initially, like many, he viewed the erhu as a simple and ancient instrument and was reluctant to choose it. However, he soon found himself captivated after attending a concert by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, where he witnessed the allure and beauty of the erhu being played. This sparked his interest and passion for the instrument.
Yet, the path to his current success was not without challenges. Mastering any skill requires substantial dedication and hard work. Wong faced difficulties learning the erhu, as he started later than most, who begin at a young age. He dedicated countless hours to honing his basic skills and reading music, refusing to give up despite the challenges. For his passion, he traveled every Saturday morning from Siu Sai Wan to Ma Wan, enduring all weather conditions without faltering. Franklin once said, "Perseverance and enthusiasm can conquer all things," and with his determination, Wong sought advice and continuously improved his erhu playing.
As time passed, he found his direction and began to shine on the stage of life. Reflecting on his journey, he identified three key elements he gained: attitude, confidence, and courage. He developed a resilient attitude towards learning, confidence in his abilities, and the courage to push his limits. Over the past decade, Wong has returned to teach younger students the erhu, believing in the importance of giving back and serving as a role model. He resonates with the saying, "When you drink the water, remember its source," and aims to support students in their musical journeys.
A music student once sought Wong's advice on balancing practice and study. He emphasized the importance of foundational training while also encouraging exposure to diverse experiences. "Focus on one thing first for efficiency, and manage your time wisely to balance other areas."
Looking ahead, Wong hopes to organize his own solo recitals, both locally and internationally. Reflecting on how he nearly overlooked the erhu, he has proven his dedication through relentless effort, transforming his love for the instrument into a lifelong passion and expertise. He has redefined public perceptions of the erhu and established his unique identity in the world.
As our school celebrates its 25th anniversary, Wong remains rooted in the school motto: "Seek truth and choose goodness." The erhu serves as his wings, allowing him to soar alongside his peers, shine brightly, and pursue his dreams. In the face of life's ups and downs, he believes that maintaining a positive outlook and swimming against the current will ultimately lead to soaring high and becoming a radiant beacon of sunshine.
